Pain Treatment and Pain Management Services in Western Sydney & Orange

The specialty of pain medicine is concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of painful disorders. Our comprehensive pain treatment services are listed below.

Pain Conditions

Chronic Pain Management

Pain is regarded as chronic when it does not go away and is experienced by a patient on most days of the week for at least 3 months.

Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain is often described as a shooting or burning pain. It can go away on its own but is often chronic.

Sometimes it is unrelenting and severe, and sometimes it comes and goes. It often is the result of nerve damage or a malfunctioning nervous system.

Cancer Pain

People with cancer may have pain caused by the cancer itself or via cancer treatment. Cancer patients may also have pain from other causes, such as arthritis, tumours, fractures, side effects from the surgery, blockages, poor circulation and muscle stiffness from lack of activity.

Pain Treatments

Regional Blocks

A regional nerve block is an injection that targets a certain nerve (or group of nerves) to help diagnose and treat nerve pain. The injection is is used to turn off pain signals coming from a specific area in the body resulting in reduced inflammation in that area.

Insertion of Pain Management Devices

Pain is regarded as chronic when it does not go away and is experienced by a patient on most days of the week for at least 3 months.

  • Intrathecal Drug Delivery Devices
  • Spinal Cord Stimulator Implants
  • Peripheral Nerve Implants

Pain Medicine

Long-term (chronic) pain is often best managed with a combination of carefully selected pain medicines. Dr Sushama Deshpande will provide individualised pain medication advice while carefully balancing  the selected medication’s pain relieving effect and its side-effects.

Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency ablation treatment is a relatively safe and low-risk procedure. Pain relief after RFA is typically experienced 1 to 3 weeks after the injection.

Neuromodulation

Neuromodulation is technology that acts directly upon nerves. It is the alteration or modulation of nerve activity by delivering electrical or pharmaceutical agents directly to an area causing pain in the patient.
